Psychotherapy

Ken Evans, Founding Director of Eurocps is an experienced psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer whose initial training was in the early 1970’s in the United Kingdom. He is registered in the UK as a Gestalt psychotherapist and as an Integrative psychotherapist and was among the first group of psychotherapists in Europe to receive the award of the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (of the European Association for Psychotherapy) in France, in February 1999. He has been Director of Training at two centers in the UK and has written a Masters degree programme in Gestalt psychotherapy and co-authored Masters degrees in Integrative psychotherapy and Transactional Analysis. In 2000 he co-authored and managed a Doctoral programme in Psychotherapy.
Ken has held several prominent positions within psychotherapy organizations in Europe reflecting his commitment to the growth and development of the profession. . He was President of the European Association for Psychotherapy in 1994 and Founding President of the European Association for Integrative Psychotherapy (1996 -1999). President of the European Association for Gestalt Therapy (2002 - 2008). Currently he is Registrar of the European Association for Integrative Psychotherapy
In December 2009 the Board of Trustees and James Antrican (Outgoing Chair) of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) awarded Ken a certificate for his Outstanding Contribution to UKCP and Services to Psychotherapy. He was Training Standards Officer for the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (1998 - 2000),
Joanna Hewitt Evans is the Co-Director of Eurocps, a UKCP registered psychotherapist and holds a Masters Degree in Gestalt Psychotherapy. She was Course Leader of the Gestalt Psychotherapy Programme in Scarborough, UK, until the Autumn of 2009 when she resigned to direct her focus to Eurocps. She is a Visiting Trainer to The Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy in Zagreb, the Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy in Lublijana and the Gestalt Foundation in Greece. Joanna was a former Senior Social Worker and a Project Manager at the Family Service Unit in Leicester, She has a Masters Degree in Social Work and has taught on a social work course. She has a particular interest in research development in psychotherapy and recently published two research articles in peer reviewed journals.

Psychotherapy with Adults
-Training Programme
Eurocps run a full four year professional training in integrative psychotherapy on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. It is accredited by the European Association for Integrative Psychotherapy. A second training will commence in Iceland in December 2011. The training in Jersey is full but there may be one or two places available commencing January 2012, for an experienced counselor wanting to train in psychotherapy. We regret we will be unable to process any application made after November 20th, 2011.

Psychotherapy with Children and Young people
-Training Programme

Eurocps is a founding member of the European Interdisciplinary Association for Therapy with Children and Young People, www.eiatcyp.eu and provides training and development in child psychotherapy to graduate psychotherapists who already have clinical experience in working with adults. Joanna Hewitt Evans is Secretary and Ken Evans a Vice President for External Affairs.
In 2008-2009 Eurocps successfully completed a training programme in Malta for qualified psychotherapists working with Adults who wanted to undertake a programme of training to equip them to work with children and young people. The programme in Malta was run between GPTI(M), the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and Eurocps. Trainers from Cleveland facilitated the first components of the programme and Joanna Hewitt Evans and Ken Evans facilitated the remaining components of the programme and evaluated the written submissions demonstrating clinical competence.
Eurocps also runs it's own programme in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy facilitated by Eurocps Associates.
The cost is currently 2,500 euro payable in six installments the commencement of each workshop. The fee includes accommodation, breakfast and lunch.
Areas of knowledge and understanding are conceptualised within four broad themes and delivered over a minimum of 12-14 months via:
· One x 5 day workshop introducing the overall model
· Six x 3 day thematic workshops
· One x 4 day workshop during which trainees will make a presentation of their clinical work with a child or young person
· A total of 27 days.
A research case study needs to be successfully completed, together with the required hours of clinical practice, supervision, personal therapy and where applicable, a mental health placement. The four broad themes with their specific content are outlined below and will be further published in greater detail in the Trainee Course Handbook.
The World of the Child
Under this theme an introductory 5 day workshop will provide an overview of the core assumptions of a relational developmental approach to child psychotherapy including:
- Pre birth and birth transition
- Creative adjustments via pre verbal attachment patterns
- Life Script cognitive closure
- Interpersonal relations seeking repetition and/or reparation
- Theory of change from a relational developmental perspective
The Child in the World
Under this theme trainees will critically evaluate in greater depth the intrapsychic and interpersonal functioning and dysfunctioning of the child as they find a ‘way of being’ or creative adjustment in their world with particular emphasis on:
- Attachment theory
- Theories of Child and Adolescent Development
- Shame and Envy
- Neuroscience
The World in the Child
Under this theme trainees will critically reflect on child – environment relations with particular regard to the impact of the wider field:
- Family, Community and School
- Special Educational Needs, Emotional, Social & Behavioural Difficulties
- Mental Health issues
Protecting the Child in the World
Under this broad theme we critically reflect on:
- Assessment/Risk Assessment,
- Diagnosis
- Child protection legislation
- Interdisciplinary and Multi-agency Working with emphasis on appropriate procedures and protocols for information sharing
- Supervision
- Anti oppressive practice
Principle Tutors
Joanna Hewitt Evans, Programme Co-Director, has a Masters degree in Psychotherapy and a Masters degree in Social Work. For 15 years she was a specialist therapeutic social worker with the Family Service Unit working with children of mixed heritage who had suffered abuse. She has run a UKCP accredited psychotherapy training programme and is a visiting trainer and supervisor at several European training institutes.
Ken Evans Programme Co- Director is a former Training Standards Officer of UKCP, Past President of the EAP, EAIP, EAGT and UKEAPC. He is current Registrar of the EAIP. He is a former local authority principle social worker/ team leader in the UK, specialising in working with families at risk, and working with fostering and adoption. He has considerable experience of running therapeutic groups for adolescents and was formerly a group work tutor for university social work students.
Other participating teaching staff will be also be involved including those who possess expertise in specialist areas of knowledge relating to children and young people.
